Whale Road Review reading + awards nominations

I’ll be reading my short prose from the Spring 2025 issue of Whale Road Review, “Glass Animal Collection,” at their 10-year anniversary reading this weekend! They nominated this piece for Best of the Net.

I’m also excited to share that I received two Pushcart Prize nominations for my work this year, from The Account for my story “There Has Been an Emergency,” and from ette review, for my short prose piece “Landlines.”

It’s heartening to receive the noms because I went into 2025 thinking I didn’t have much work forthcoming for publication, after not publishing much in 2024 aside from my chapbook Commuting. But timing/publishing timelines worked out so that 2025 ended up looking like a prolific year while some of the work was accepted in 2024 or very early 2025. I didn’t submit as often, and when I did, I was careful where I sent things, only sending work if I thought it really was a fit for the journal. I wrote “There Has Been an Emergency” a few years ago, and though it received a couple encouraging rejections, it took about 2 years to place, and I had nearly given up on it but refused to because I did like it.

But now I really don’t have any work forthcoming in 2026 aside from my book. Only two submissions out, for book manuscripts not stories. I’ve recently stepped back from one of my editing roles because it was all too much, but doing so made me feel like a failure, or like I’m giving up a great opportunity. Hopefully I will find the space to work on my train novel soon.
